Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity Will Come Out Early Next Year

Deerhoof

San Francisco indie rock band Deerhoof will tour ahead of the Jan. 23 release of their next Kill Rock Stars album, Friend Opportunity.

Greg Saunier, John Dieterich and Satomi Matsuzaki made the rounds opening for Radiohead and The Flaming Lips this summer, and will play with Fiery Furnaces on a fall tour that includes stops at Toronto's Opera House on Oct. 30 and Montreal's Le Tulipe on Oct. 31.

Fans will likely hear new material from Friend Opportunity, the band's 10th album, at the shows. The record features artwork by Scottish artist David Shrigley, who was responsible for Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "Agnes Queen Of Sorrow" and Blur's "Good Song" videos.

Deerhoof have posted a free nine-song EP of live recordings and covers on their website for those who need a fix before the new disc's arrival.

Deerhoof are also working with composer Ed Shearmur on the soundtrack for Dedication, a film directed by actor Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive, Six Feet Under, Miami Vice) and starring Billy Crudup, Mandy Moore, Tom Wilkinson and Amy Sedaris.

Guitarist Chris Cohen left Deerhoof in May to devote all of his time to his other band, The Curtains. Their new album, Calamity, is due in stores on Oct. 24 via Asthmatic Kitty.
