Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori Releasing Solo Debut LP

Miho Hatori

Though it's been almost five years since Cibo Matto split up, vocalist Miho Hatori hasn't been sitting around.

The demure Japanese-born New Yorker has released several EPs under various monikers and is set to release her first full-length solo record via Rykodisc on Oct. 24.

Ecdysis, the term used for when an insect sheds its exoskeleton in order to allow growth, was produced by Hatori. Much like the music created by Cibo Matto, the disc features a wide variety of styles, including dance-pop, world music, psychedelia, jazz fusion and piano balladry. "A Song For Kids" is a catchy sing-along pop tune with Japanese lyrics.

"Ecdysis was important for me to make," says Hatori. "When I went home and listened to it after the last day of mixing, the first thing I felt was: 'Wow, that's really me!'

"I could hear myself in the music. I could connect with my parents because what they gave me is a combination of everything they've ever done, and with this music I'm going into the future because of everything I've done in the past."

The food-obsessed Cibo Matto were formed in Brooklyn in 1993 by Hatori and keyboardist Yuka Honda. Their critically acclaimed 1996 debut, Viva La Woman!, was named one of the top 90 albums of the '90s by Spin magazine. Stereo Type A followed three years later before the two women went their separate ways.
