Jarvis Cocker Is Running The World With Solo Track

Jarvis Cocker

Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has released his first solo track on the internet.

"Running The World" can now be heard on Cocker's MySpace page. The song was written a year ago on the night of the Live 8 concert.

"It's in no way critical of Geldof and co. but I remember thinking at the time: 'Where does engaging with these politicians/businessmen really get you?' — (12 months on & the cunts still haven't paid up as far as I can make out) — maybe the problem is something more... fundamental," Cocker writes on his MySpace page.

"Anyway, what do I know? I'm just a pampered rock star — but at least I think it's good to discuss this stuff. Don't you? Let me know what you think."

Cocker formed Pulp in 1978 at the age of 15, but the band didn't hit the big time until they released "Common People" in 1995. Following a last minute headlining performance at the U.K.'s Glastonbury Festival that June, Pulp were elevated to star status and remained there until they disbanded in 2002.

Cocker has remained fairly active since his days in Pulp despite claiming at one point that he wanted to leave the music industry. He released music under the pseudonym Relaxed Muscle in 2003 and has been featured on several soundtracks. He contributed a song to the Leonard Cohen documentary, I'm Your Man, reworked a classic sea chantey on a companion album to Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and wrote and performed three songs on the Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire soundtrack.

Cocker hasn't announced plans to record or release more tracks in the near future, but has promised to add updates to his MySpace page.
