Tokyo Police Club Get To Work On Debut Full-Length

Tokyo Police Club

It feels like Tokyo Police Club were just warming up, but the band will spend the summer keeping cool.

"We're taking a break for the summer to write our record because we've been doing so much touring," says singer/bassist Dave Monks.

The band's debut EP, A Lesson In Crime, was released mid-spring to critical acclaim. The band have been touring full-time since then, which Monks says was both fun and somewhat stressful.

But now that writing has started, what can we expect from TPC v.2?

"It's definitely not going to be A Lesson In Crime 2," says Monks, adding that there will probably be a bit less handclapping on the full-length. "It's going to be more understated, less bombastic.

"Usually I'll come with words and a melody and maybe an idea of like, 'It would be cool if we did this.' From there it'll be sort of half-realized, so I'll take it home and tamper with it, then go back and work on it some more. So it's a real back and forth process. It takes a long time to write songs.

Lest you think the album will be in your Christmas stocking, however, the band probably won't even have it in jewel cases by that time.

"It would be nice to record late this year, like December or January, but if it takes us longer, that's the way it's going to be," Monks says. "We're happy with [producer] Jon [Drew], who did the EP. We'd like to work with him again. I can't say anything for sure."

Tokyo Police Club have a couple of Toronto shows scheduled. They open for Broken Mascis Scene at the Mod Club on Friday night, and they're at Edgefest II on July 16.
