Mould And Morel Go 50/50 On Blowoff Disc

Bob Mould

Bob Mould and Richard Morel have completed work on their first collaborative album as Blowoff, a project named after the pair's monthly DJ party at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club.

Their self-titled album will be released on Sept. 5 by Mould and Morel's own Full Frequency Music label. It takes elements from Mould's rock background as a solo artist, and with Husker Du and Sugar, and Morel's more electronic, dance-oriented sounds to create pop music that shares some similarities with some of today's dance-rock acts. They describe the Blowoff sound on their website as being something akin to that of New York's Scissor Sisters, but make sure to point out that there's really nothing like Blowoff on the market today.

"There's some stuff that is house-y and some stuff that is rock," Mould told Billboard.com. "There's some breezy, '60s pop and some darker, downtempo things.

"It's all over the place. There's a lot of guitars and a lot of double vocals. Everything is 50/50 as far as writing. No outside collaborators."

You can get a taste of what he's talking about by downloading "Hormone Love" from the Blowoff site.

Mould also has a new solo record in the works to follow last year's Body Of Song. The still untitled album will come out sometime next year.

Morel is best known for his dance remix work. He collaborated with Deep Dish on a rework of Dido's "Thank You," which won a Grammy Award. As Pink Noise, Morel has remixed Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Killers and Seal.

Here are the songs on Blowoff's self-titled debut:

"Saturday Night All The Time"
