Lady Sovereign Fan Collecting Cash To Try And Score A Date

Lady Sovereign

The 2004 documentary My Date With Drew may have shown us the ups and downs of trying to win a date with an actress, but it left more than a few wondering: How hard would it be for an average dude to get a date with a rock star? One ambitious fan has decided to find out — and to take us along for the ride.

A few weeks ago, San Francisco native Zach Slow launched a website and a twofold mission: to get a date with ponytailed U.K. MC Lady Sovereign when she plays his hometown on June 9, and to raise the proper funds for said date. ("Date" in a loose sense of the word, that is; Slow makes sure to clarify on his site that "this is just strictly partying for six or so hours and having a great time.")

"I already tried to hang out with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, and they weren't very accommodating," Slow says. "But the guys from Hootie And The Blowfish have been begging me for a date, so go figure.

"OK, seriously.

"I'd been a Lady Sovereign fan since the beginning of her career," explains Slow. "A couple weeks ago I saw her perform at the Coachella music festival.

"I had what some people would call a 'spiritual awakening,' but I just call it being stoned. As I was watching her perform I thought, 'God, it would be so awesome to party with Lady Sovereign.' At that moment I decided I had to try because it sounded like such an incredibly fun thing.

"Funny thing is I'm way too shy to ask people out even if I know they like me. So to try to get a total stranger to hang out with me who happens to be a famous MC is pretty much the craziest thing I could possibly do."

But considering that people both a) love crazy and b) love rooting for the underdog, Slow's been making pretty good headway on his quest. At the time of this article's writing, he's raised $729.47 U.S. in donations — which, according to his site's estimates, will pay for some booze, some blunts, a fake ID for the underage Lady Sov, and possibly a limo ride, "because god knows we'll be in no condition to walk."

He's still a bit far from his ultimate goal of $10,000, but he hopes that, with little more than two weeks left, some generous souls — and perhaps some fellow Lady Sovereign fans — will step in to help.

"Everything I do on my dream outing with Lady Sovereign is actually being paid for by her fans," Slow says. "It's awesome.

"So, the bling, limos and partying we do will all be gifts from others, not me. I'm sure Lady Sovereign has a bunch of money already, so I plan on doing things that she wouldn't normally do. Plus, I want to give her some custom bling that she'll always have as a gift from everyone who donated."

Yet no matter how much money Slow manages to raise, it'd be hard to see how he isn't making a memorable experience out of the journey itself. In between a mass of media interviews, posting videos and regular blog entries on his website, and even some elusive contact with the Sov herself, Slow sounds like he's having a great (albeit stressful) time. He justifies it as such:

"At some point in your life, you see a famous rock star or celebrity and wish you could hang out with them, see what their life is like, and get to know them. I think we can all relate to that. People have been so supportive and generous to my project, and I think it's because I'm doing something everyone's wanted to do. Being able to hang out with one of my favourite bands after a show is something I used to dream about as a kid. I'm so glad people are helping me make that happen."
