My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields Back In Bed With Sofia Coppola

New Order

Kevin Shields has once again been coaxed out of hiding by director Sofia Coppola in order to work on the soundtrack to her new film, Marie Antoinette.

Shields, the reclusive guitarist/singer/songwriter from My Bloody Valentine, last emerged in 2003 to contribute four score pieces to the soundtrack for Coppola's last film, Lost In Translation.

Shields has remixed two '80s hits by Bow Wow Wow: "Fools Rush In" (originally by Johnny Mercer) and "I Want Candy" (originally by The Strangeloves). Bow Wow Wow's "Aphrodisiac" will also appear in the film. Coppola's production company is called I Want Candy.

Shields' involvement with the soundtrack was co-ordinated by Air drummer Brian Reitzell, the music supervisor for Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette. Air recorded the score to Coppola's 1999 film, The Virgin Suicides.

"The story's about teenagers in Versailles, so I wanted it to have energy, youth and a teenaged feeling, because the characters really were kids," Coppola explained after the premiere of Marie Antoinette at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week. "It had a little bit of a punk attitude to say we're going to do history from this young girl's point of view."

Parallels can be drawn between Antoinette and Bow Wow Wow singer Annabella Lwin, as the former married future French king Louis XVI when she was 14 and the latter was discovered at the same age by Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. One of Antoinette's lovers in the film is also supposed to be based on another '80s star, Adam Ant.

Sony Pictures has released a list of the songs that will be used in conjunction with the movie, but it's thus far unclear which of them will appear on the soundtrack. The Cure's " Plainsong" and "All Cats Are Grey," New Order's "Ceremony" and "Age Of Consent," The Strokes' "What Ever Happened," Aphex Twin's "Avril 14th," Windsor For The Derby's "The Melody Of A Fallen Tree" and songs by Air, Gang Of Four, Adam And The Ants, Phoenix, Squarepusher, Siouxsie And The Banshees and The Radio Dept. are all likely contenders.
