Manitoba Albums To Be Reissued Under Caribou Name With Bonus Tracks

Caribou

If one good thing has come from Dan Snaith having to change the name of his electronic project from Manitoba to Caribou, it's that new and old fans will get a second chance to see his albums hit store shelves.

Domino Records will re-release both Manitoba albums, 2001's Start Breaking My Heart and 2003's Up In Flames, under the Caribou moniker on June 20. Both will include bonus discs with b-sides from singles, remixes and videos.

The name change became necessary when, in 2004, Handsome Dick Manitoba (real name Richard Blum) of The Dictators had a private investigator serve Snaith with notice that he'd be sued over the use of the Manitoba name. Rather than involve himself in a lengthy and costly court battle (which he was certain he could have won if he tried), Snaith opted for the change to Caribou.

"We were touring across Canada and in the middle of nowhere and we needed to come up with a name," Snaith told ChartAttack last May about how he decided upon the new handle. "So we just sat in a field in the middle of the prairies and took acid and tried to think of names.

"And as soon as we came up with this one [Caribou] it just fit. It made total sense."
