Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium Bumped To May 9

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' much-anticipated Stadium Arcadium will come out a month later than originally anticipated, but the first single will hit the airwaves on April 3.

Singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary, guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith originally wrote 38 songs for the album before starting the editing process. The final 28-song collection, produced by Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash) and to be released on May 9, is spread over two discs: Jupiter and Mars.

"We set out to write 13 songs," says Kiedis. "But as has been the case every time we've tried to do that, we ended up with 30-some-odd songs.

"The difference this time was we ended up liking all of those songs and finishing all of those songs, and it actually became a very difficult process to even whittle it down to 28."

Lead single "Dani California" will see its worldwide debut on April 3. The song's video was shot by Tony Kaye (American History X) and takes a look at rock 'n' roll history. Its Canadian premiere is set for April 6.

"The most important idea for this album was movement," says Smith. "Something new is constantly being introduced in every chorus or verse, whether it's a backing vocal or a guitar part, a different rhythm or an unexpected style."

In addition to the normal release, Stadium Arcadium will be available in a limited-edition black box set that includes the two disc set and a DVD featuring the "Dani California" video, a behind-the-scenes look at its creation, an hour-long interview with the Chili Peppers, a 28-page booklet, original artwork by band members and "special space-age discoveries."

Stadium Arcadium is the Chili Peppers' ninth album and the first since 2002's By The Way. The group have sold more than 50 million albums over their career.
