Melissa McGhee Whisked Out Of Idol Competition

Melissa McGhee

Word of advice to the remaining 11 American Idol contestants and all those who come after them: If Stevie Wonder is in the room and you're singing one of his songs, you'd better make sure you remember the lyrics.

This was the downfall of 21-year-old Melissa McGhee, who flubbed her way out of competition when she forgot the words to Wonder's ballad, "Lately," during the Tuesday night performance show. More embarrassingly, it was the Wonder themed night and the legend was, in fact, in attendance.

Joining McGhee in the treacherous bottom three were Ace Young and Lisa Tucker. Both of their inclusions in the low end of the voting elicited boos from the audience, not to mention disdain from the ever-chirpy Paula Abdul.

"I don't get it," she said.

Even resident dream-wrecker Simon Cowell was surprised by Young and Tucker's poor voter turnout, and told the contestants they'd better step up their performances since anyone could end up at the bottom of the heap. MTV reports that Young is the current Vegas odds-on-favourite to win the competition, which ends May 24.

This week's show yielded over 32 million votes, McGhee receiving the fewest number of them despite a performance Cowell called, "edgy" and "strong."

Still, the Tampa, Fla. native wasn't entirely surprised to be booted, admitting to host Ryan Seacrest that she had somewhat expected it.
