Top Of The Charts: Jack Johnson's Still Swinging At The Top

We're curious how Jack Johnson's Sing-A-Longs And Lullabies has been able to sell more copies than any other album in Canada for the past two weeks, but it has. His soundtrack to the new Curious George movie is this week's chart-topper, which illustrates that this country has more surfer dudes and cartoon monkey fans than past research had indicated.Maybe there's something in Valentine's Day that really does get people feeling all gushy and gooey, as Warner Canada's From The Heart compilation and Andrea Bocelli's Amore occupy the #2 and #3 slots respectively on the sales chart a week after the Hallmark holiday.
British singer James Blunt's Back To Bedlam remains entrenched at #4 and Madonna (who just announced that she'll be touring smaller than normal venues later this year) moves up a spot to #5. Salut Joe, a francophone tribute to French artist Joe Dassin, drops three notches to #6.
After more than a year on the chart, and being the top-selling album in Canada by a domestic artist last year, Michael Buble's It's Time is climbing back up again. It sits at #7 after a ninth-place showing last week. The annual Grammy Nominees compilation occupies the #8 hole, followed by Il Divo's Ancora at #9.
All of Nickelback's Juno Award nominations last week must have reminded consumers that the rock quartet released an album last year, as sales of All The Right Reasons were strong enough to push it back into the top 10. The fact that the group are in the midst of a Canadian tour probably didn't hurt either.
Canada may still be part of the Commonwealth, but we no longer follow Britain's lead in everything. The Arctic Monkeys' much-hyped Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not — which broke sales records in debuting at #1 over there a few weeks ago — enters the chart here at #16. But that was still good enough to make it the highest-ranking new album of the week.
The other debuts in the top 50 were the Philosopher Kings' Castles at #19, Sergio Mendes' Timeless at #39 and the One Tree Hill soundtrack at #46.
Jaheim's Ghetto Classics debuted at #1 south of the border, where Johnson's album ranked second.
