DMX Now Behind Bars, Not The Wheel

Showing up late for a court appearance isn't too smart after you haven't left that great of an impression in the first place. Oh DMX, when will you learn?

Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, was expected to face 60 days of jail time after pleading guilty to violating the terms of a conditional release. The rapper originally ran afoul of the law after a June 2004 incident at John F. Kennedy International Airport, but was given a conditional release last December that was dependent upon him staying out of trouble for a year.

He wasn't able to do that, as he was cited for speeding and being involved in a three-car accident with an unmarked police car.

The Associated Press reports that Criminal Court Judge Dorothy Chin- Brandt got an earful of an apology from DMX for being three hours late for his November 17 sentencing.

The rapper — who arrived in court in handcuffs after spending the previous night in jail — claimed that he was delayed by an asthma attack, and had a doctor's note to prove it.

The judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest and threatened that, in place of a 60-day sentence, she would enforce a one-year jail term. Instead, DMX will spend 70 days in prison on Rikers Island in New York. With good behaviour, he could be out in 46 days.
