Vancouver Buzz: Manvils Guitarist Temps With The Stereophonics

Word on the street has it that local Manvils guitarist Mark Parry has been tapped to take on second guitar duties for the Stereophonics on their upcoming U.K. tour this fall. At this point, details are sketchy, but hopefully I can track Mark down in the coming weeks and get the skinny. In the meantime, you can catch Mark and his Manvil posse at The Candy Bar (2066 Kingsway) on Saturday with John Ford. Tickets for Beck's July 14 performance at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre go on sale Saturday morning. Pearl Jam's September 2 show at GM Place also go on sale at 10 a.m. on the same morning.The Hard On Peopleare headlining what's sure to be a wild evening at the Lamplighter on Saturday. Fronted by Mark Oliver, this band is made up of a host of seminal local legends. Ian Tiles (ex-Pointed Sticks) covers guitar duties, Iain Ross (who has played with Jello Biafra) handles drums and Matt Wolfson (who once played with Roger Daltry) assumes the bass. This show also features opening act The Blakes from Seattle. Bloc Party are rolling into town this weekend to bring their haphazard fun to the Commodore on May 29.Recent Mint Record signees P:ano are headlining an evening at the Lamplighter featuring material from their latest album Brigadoon. Great Aunt Ida, who also have a new album hitting stores on June 21, will open the show. GAI also play the Western Front on June 10 with The Fits, Joel R.L. Phelps and The Secret Three. Local drunko-punkos Crystal Pistol are headlining a show at Richard's On Richards May 31 with The Rumours and Hybrahma.The hard-gigging Leeroy Stagger is headlining a show at the Railway Club on May 29 with the Yoko Casionos opening. He's also playing a show put on by the Bluebird North Songwriters Association on May 31 at the Grace Memorial United Church.Kids These Days have gathered enough of a local following to headline a show at Richard's On Richards June 1 with fellow local acts Blood Meridian and Castle Project.Kathleen Edwards is at the Commodore on June 1.The always hilarious Geoff Berner Trio are playing the Railway Club June 3 and 4 with the equally humorous Carolyn Mark slated to open.The harmonic gals in Po' Girl are playing a tour kick-off party at the Media Club on June 9 with JT & The Clouds.Just across the border, there are two major festivals taking place in the coming days providing plenty of inspiration for a road trip. First up is Sasquatchfest, which goes down May 28 at the Gorge and features a solid indie line-up including The Pixies, Wilco, Modest Mouse, The Arcade Fire, Jem, Bloc Party and many more. Check out the website for more information. Next up is Endfest taking place on June 4 at the White River Amphitheatre (outside of Seattle).
