Top Of The Charts: 50 Cents Takes It All The Way To The Piggy Bank

50 Cent

To absolutely no one’s surprise 50 Cent massacred everyone on the chart to debut at #1.

For the last three weeks Michael Buble has been king, but he proved to be no match for Fiddy’s star power. The rapper sold 52,900 copies of The Massacre, a feat even more impressive considering the disc only came out on Friday, giving him five days to push his product instead of seven. The last person to do this was Eminem back in November when Encore debuted at #1 five days after it was released. 50 must be happy to be going gold in Canada within his first week, but he’s probably more pleased after annihilating his competition south of the border. Fiddy sold 1.14 million discs in the States, enough to give him a nice shiny platinum record.

Getting beat by 50 was one of the biggest international stars around. Jennifer Lopez sold a measly 19,700 records to take #2. Maybe her hubby Marc Anthony can help her win over some fans? Doesn’t look like it — even a Grammy like duet on Rebirth can’t convince the public that Jenny From The Block is worth getting giddy over anymore.

While J-Lo’s sitting pretty at #2, one surfer dude isn’t far behind. Canadian’s are gearing up for some long summer nights by picking up Jack Johnson’s new disc of mellow acoustic tunes — perfect for a late night bonfire. In Between Dreams sold 18,900 copies, enough to get him into #3. Before you take Johnson’s disc to the cabin however, take this advice — it’s dangerous to fall asleep in front of a bonfire.

Sure, Michael Buble isn’t #1 anymore, but have no fear, the Buble is still close by. Dropping to #4 this week, the youthful vocalist still has a fighting chance to climb back up the chart. With television guest spots (Leno last week) and a voice straight out of the '50s, your grandparents won’t be able to keep their hands off this Canadian crooner's disc.

After a long run at #2, Green Day drop to #5. The guys have been in the top 10 for a long time now, so they too may head back up the chart once Fiddy’s done beating up the competition. The Mars Volta’s sprawling new disc Frances The Mute debuted at #6 this week, while the Grammy Nominees 2005 compilation is still up there, dropping five spots to #7.

Now that 50 Cent and The Game have kissed and made up, this little battle on the chart is a lot less fun to watch. This could have been the greatest fight since Tonya Harding beat up Paula Jones in Celebrity Boxing, but the two rappers had to go and make up. In case Fiddy is wondering, The Game is at #8. Rounding out the top 10 is Gwen Stefani’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby, at #9 and Ray Charles’ Genius Loves Company at #10. Some other notable debuts include Judas Priest’s new record Angel Of Retribution (#12), the Juno Awards 2005 (#13), Kathleen Edwards’ Back To Me (#35) and Doves' Some Cities (#75).
