Rivers Cuomo Is Thinking About Tomorrow

Rivers Cuomo wants to go back to school.

This fall, the Weezer frontman may be returning to Harvard for a semester, instantly making him the coolest guy on campus, which he was last at in the spring of 1997.

As excited as we all are that famous rock stars are willing to further their education, Weezer fans would rather hear some news about that forthcoming fifth album. Cuomo has decided to tide us over with three new cover songs posted on his personal website for now, but there's more. Oh, so much more.

Cuomo covers Ann Poonkasem's "Invincible," John Denver's "Annie's Song" and, another Annie song, "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie. "Invincible" is pretty catchy and would probably fare well as a radio single, but it's "Tomorrow" complete with synth-solo and programmed drum track that would be a huge hit with live audiences should Weezer ever pull it out onstage.

For some reason, Cuomo is afraid to consolidate his two websites together, claiming that it's a big commitment, but on his other site, he has now listed a bunch of personal info that will undoubtedly make fans giggle with glee. Did you know that Cuomo used to come home from school and watch Bob Ross and The Guiding Light? And, like, he's not a big movie buff, but he likes Star Wars?

It's like Rivers and I are best buds now. His musical tastes are pretty divergent, ranging from Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Nirvana and ABBA. But back to the new record.

Still a work in progress, news on the Rick Rubin-produced album has had a slight update on the Weezer website with the band saying that "the song lists have been trimmed to a killer 'a-list,' and everyone is getting excited to rock hard and get the album on tape."

The last we heard about a release date was earlier this spring when Cuomo announced that the album should be available at the start of next year.
