Loose Ends: Not By Choice Rock The Boat

Not By Choice's Mike Bilcox

Last night (August 28), Ajax punkers Not By Choice buttered up a group of Edge 102.1 contest winners and industry types with a private CD release concert. Now, these radio winners concerts aren't uncommon, but Not By Choice had one unique thing going for them — they played floating on water.

Just like in their video for "Standing All Alone," Not By Choice decided to hold their Toronto release party on a boat. Everyone loaded themselves onto the Obsession III, which proceeded to take off on a three hour tour around Lake Ontario. When on stage, the boys in the band were advocating that the audience take advantage of the on-deck bar, but before the show started, they weren't filled with as much bravado.

ChartAttack ran into drummer Liam Killeen before the set, who was chillin' on the lower deck, drinking a bottle of water. Why hadn't he hit the beer? Well, the boat was a little rocky and he was afraid of getting seasick during the band's big showcase and projectile vomiting all over the crowd. While that would have been unfortunate, it certainly would've made for an even more memorable evening.

Speaking of Not By Choice, as we've previously reported, the band will be celebrating the release of their new record, Maybe One Day, on Tuesday (September 3) by parading down Toronto's Yonge Street on a flatbed truck. We can now report that the band will be stopping in at Edge 102.1 for a 4 p.m. interview and will then make their way down Queen Street to MuchMusic to play live on air shortly after.

American Weakerthans fans who are looking forward to seeing the Winnipeg hometown heroes on their current U.S. tour shouldn't expect to see tourmates Christiansen on the bill. Although the band were supposed to do the whole tour with The Weakerthans, Christiansen were involved in a van accident in Atlanta, causing Terry, the band's drummer to break his clavicle. The band will resume touring in mid-September when they hook up with Glassjaw and Boy Sets Fire.

Casino Rama patrons will be disappointed to learn that the Ontario has-been mecca has also had to cancel some shows. Dwight Yoakam, who was to play on October, has had to cancel his show, as has Cyndi Lauper, who was scheduled in for October 25 and 26. Luckily, now grown-up teen popstar/Playboy model Tiffany has graciously stepped in and will perform in Cyndi's vacated dates.

Finally, fans of the beloved Langley Schools Music Project who also happen to be diehard vinyl collectors (and we're guessing it's a pretty large percentage) are in for a treat. Gammon Records is releasing the record, which was released in CD form last year by Bar/None Records, on vinyl. But it's not just regular vinyl — it's going to be an exact replica of the original 1976 and 1977 releases (which are currently going for about $750 on eBay). Two 12" discs will be released, complete with the original liner notes. There will also be two extra songs that were not on the Bar/None release. Look for it in stores on November 26.
