Fubar: The Making Of The Cover

Chart's Fubar Photo Shoot

Kerpow! Pfffssttttt. Glug, choke, sputter and smile.

"This is how it's done kids, try this everywhere — not just at home."

Thank you, Theo, for introducing our young audience to the newly resurrected and always entertaining party trick, the "Shotgun." Theo from Gob was just one of the rock and roll all-stars givin'r on a sunny Wednesday morning for a Chart magazine cover photo shoot.

Deryck from Sum 41, Jay Ferguson from Sloan and Greig Nori from Treble Charger were all on-hand making the Fubar soundtrack a somewhat disturbing reality. Since replicating, or maybe idolizing, characters from the flick was the object of the day's shoot, the first order of the day was the mullet. They abounded, filling our sunny little space with hair extensions that would make even a Tesla fan drool with envy.

Theo and Jay were saddled with the dubious honour of wearing mustaches for the afternoon, and Theo sported a look that turned out to be oddly Mexican. His apres-stylist appearance was dubbed "Tijuana Slum Chic" by his publicist, but Theo said it better:

"Look at the hydraulics in my El Camino, man!"

The whole lot of us schlepped back to an old brown van that was our first shooting locale and settled in for some metal signs and mullet shots. Yep, I bet you likely thought cover shoots are on glamourous sets with Evian water bottles and director's chairs — so did I. Not Chart style!

We like to think we offer the rock stars of this world a more life-enhancing experience. It could have been boring, though, if someone had not been genius enough to provide beer. Nobody loved it more than Theo, who grabbed a pair of pliers, stabbed them into a beer can and "shotgunned" the whole goddamn thing.

Ah Theo, for all of us who weren't drinking beer on that frickin' hot, sunny day — we thank you for at least doing it in an entertaining fashion. Moving to the backyard, the props got better and so did Theo's antics. Add together some old fridges, a few old bikes, some plastic lawn furniture a couple cans of good ol' Canadian and... BIGGITY BAM! We were all white trash.

Even Terry and Deaner would have been proud of the way the fridge door was heaved across the property. Fuck that fridge door up!

At some point during the mid-afternoon booze-fest MuchMusic showed up to get in on the furniture-thrashing fun. The boys did their best to show Bradford just how it's done in proper high-tops-with-the-tongues-out fashion. We weren't sure what footage Much would show — the blatant consumption of alcohol, the swearing or the irresponsible behaviour. Either way, the whole event could have made for some quality television.

When all was said and done and the slave-driving art director was satisfied, the rock stars departed, the extras dispersed and the costume people packed up. As for the Chart staff, editors and Egg-McMuffin-getting interns alike, we surveyed the smelly, beer soaked lawn and congratulated ourselves in helping turn up the good and turn down the suck!
