What happens when you take four foxy ladies who actually know how to play instruments and aren’t getting by on strategic navel exposure and pouty, glossed lips? You get Fabulous Disaster, a group of fierce but friendly women who know how to rock. Toronto was lucky enough to get a glimpse of these lassies at Toronto's Horseshoe Thursday night where they joined The Real McKenzies and The Darkest Of The Hillside Thickets for The Real McKenzies' CD release party.I had a chance to sit and have a few beers and a slice of pizza with Fabulous Disaster. The vixens, vocalist Laura Litter, guitar player Lynda Mandolyn, bass player Mr. Nancy and drummer Sally, explained that they're tougher than The Donnas because they’ve been around longer."We’re the world’s oldest juvenile delinquents," Mandolyn said simply. FD, who just released their debut album Put Out Or Get Out, sites an array of musical influences including The Muffs, The Go-Gos, Nashville Pussy, The Pretenders and The Damned. In the beginning, Mr. Nancy was in the band Fiction and the other FD girls were in Piston. They decided to get together as a side project and they’ve been together ever since, four years this coming January. They explained that it was just natural for them to work together. "It ain’t brain surgery but it rocks," Mr. Nancy said.Sally, who was celebrating her 23rd birthday, is responsible for the band’s catchy name. It’s a line from her favourite movie, Sid & Nancy. Malcolm McLaren, ex-Sex Pistols manager called Sid a "fabulous disaster."The ladies said that their strength lies in the fact that they can actually play. Litter said that there are many good female musicians out there that no one knows about. That doesn't mean she doesn't have weaknesses though."Her mom buys her, like, 25 pounds of candy and she goes through them in two weeks," Sally said of Litter, who suffers from a serious sweet tooth.Despite prying, FD said that nothing really strange goes on at their shows, but they do have a stalker in San Francisco who makes them home made cards and leaves them at Litter’s front door. Still, they have had the odd situation on stage. Sometimes macho guys like to show the ladies what they’re packing in their pants. At one show, Mr. Nancy volunteered to sign an eager man’s penis."I had Sharpies in each of my pockets, like, six shooters," Mr. Nancy said. "I said ‘Whip it out’ and he fuckin’ ran." So, if any guys out there want to get an autograph on their johnsons, Fabulous Disaster aren’t afraid to do it. You may get your chance because they may just be coming to your town.Fabulous Disaster Tour Dates:October 26 Ottawa, ON @ Zaphod BeeblebroxOctober 28 Kingston, ON @ Scherzo PubOctober 29 Montreal, QC @ Foufounes ElectriquesOctober 30 Quebec City, QC @ KashmirNovember 1 Halifax, NS @ The AtticNovember 2 Moncton, NB @ 53rd & 3rdNovember 3 Fredericton, NB @ The ChestnutNovember 7 Regina, SK @ The StateNovember 8 Red Deer AB @ Dakota’sNovember 9 Nelson BC @ The QueensNovember 11 Vancouver, BC @ tbdDates subject to change.
