Zoinks! Scooby Scooby-Doo, where are you? Well, that’s easy. He’s off solving mysteries with Sugar Ray.
That’s right. Sugar Ray will play themselves in the live-action movie adaptation of the ‘70s cartoon series Scooby-Doo, due out in 2002.
The band is heading to Australia at the end of the month to film scenes, which are set in a fictitious place called Spooky Island. [Editor's Note: Any bets the evil ghost will end up being the museum caretaker?]
"Some band had to do it, so we volunteered," said Sugar Ray singer Mark McGrath. "But it’ll be fun."
Sugar Ray is pretty busy these days with filming the video for "When It’s Over," the first single from their upcoming fourth album, due out June 12. The video features a kung-fu fighting cameo by basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The band will also be performing on the David Letterman Show on June 11. As well, the band is expected to contribute to the film’s soundtrack.
Scooby-Doo will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. as everyone’s favorite meddling kids, Daphne Blake and Fred Jones. Matthew Lillard is to play Norville "Shaggy" Rogers and Rowan Atkinson as Mondavarious.
McGrath says that despite his age, he has a great affinity for the detective dog, Scooby.
"If there’s one cartoon you’re gonna do, it’s Scooby-Doo," said McGrath. "He’s been in our lives forever. I’m too old now, but I still watch Scooby-Doo."
What hair-raising hi-jinx will be in store for the band? Perhaps a Dazed And Confused moment in the mystery machine? Maybe McGrath will hook up with Daphne Blake? Or maybe Scooby Doo will take over the world with Sugar Ray? Well, one thing’s for sure — at least the guys won’t be sporting those god-awful orange socks that Velma wore.
