Fashion can say a lot about an artist. Take for instance Ricky Martin's practically painted-on jeans that make it easier for him to shake and shimmy with uncharacteristic fluidity for a man, thereby making him a little suspect (if you know what I mean, wink-wink, nudge-nudge...) or Britney Spears' trashy look which contrasts against her "virginal" stance. This brings us to Todd Kerns, former leader of the mid-'90s Canadian alt.rock band Age Of Electric, now back with a new band Static In Stereo, and, hey, a new look too! But what exactly does this new look mean?Into the Chart office arrived the new and unreleased copy of Static In Stereo's self-titled album along with a colourful press release that included a highly-anticipated, up-to-date shot of SiS, which includes the three Kerns brothers, John, Ryan and Todd, and an old cute friend, Scott McCarger, who is in on drums. The new outfit's description has been told to us like this: Todd's the "serious one," John's the "wacky one," Ryan's the "shy one" and Scott's the always "funny one" (he's the drummer, who woulda thunk?) Hmm, could these guys be a new Canadian boy-band of rock? On looks alone, these guys get thumbs-up. From the four females in the office, Scott gets two votes for hottest guy, Todd gets one for "looking like a rock star" and Ryan gets a nod because our intern, who met him at their video shoot, says he looks good with "his pants down." John gets kudos 'cause he smiles a lot even though he's got the same old mohawk.Seems as if the ratty black jeans and leather jackets have been chucked. Looking polished is the key now. Rockers galore just might adore this look. Todd's black hair has been layered in a feminine, truly de riguer style, but the huge flaming dragon tattoo on his right arm sure as hell takes away from the fruity hairstyle. One thought comes to this closet rocker's mind, though: Hey, it's Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx! The polished rock look seems like a perfect image for the all-out rawk if the Static In Stereo album. It's got hints of Cheap Trick melodies in it too. From glimpsing these promo shots, methinks the band's got themselves a lovely make-up artist and fashion stylist trailing behind them wherever they tread. Hey, good on them for looking their best before the record comes out on May 29. Only time will tell if this look'll sell.—Debbie Bento
