Deftones' Chino Moreno Silenced By Bruised Vocal Chords... Temporarily

Ottawa Deftones fans found themselves less-than-pleasantly surprised when news came down of a last-minute cancellation of yesterday's gig at the Civic Pavillion, a first-time occurrence in the Deftones' long musical career. According to one fan, an hour and a half after the doors opened for the concert, concert-goers were informed that the band were forced to pull the plug at the last minute.

One fan at the show, Julia Della Camera, sent us her interpretation of the events via email:

"People started screaming that it was cancelled, but I thought it was just a ploy to get people out of line."

Early yesterday at an Ottawa hospital, singer Chino Moreno was diagnosed with bruised vocal chords, leading to the last-minute cancellation. According to the band's website, he began to notice his voice straining after excessive performing in Toronto and Montreal that included not only scheduled shows but also daytime appearances on MuchMusic and MusiquePlus. This ailment has put the band out of commission for the next three to five days according to tour manager Steve Kidd and put upcoming gigs, including tonight's scheduled appearance in Scranton, PA, in jeopardy.

The band, who want fans to know that they are sorry about the turn of events, have already begun trying to make up for last night's cancelled gig. Those already at the venue did not have to leave completely empty-handed as both the Deftones and opening act Taproot came out to sign autographs and talk to the fans. As the crowd departed, they were informed that the band would be back in the future and concert promoters House of Blues are hinting at a spring appearance in the area.
