The first trailer for Song to Song, Terrence Malick’s upcoming drama about the Austin music scene, has been released ahead of its Mar. 10 debut at SXSW.
Starring Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman, the film features a star-studded cast as well as performances by a number of musicians. Expected to appear in acting rolls are Lykke Li, Patty Smith, and Florence Welch. Musical appearances are also expected by Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Lips, and Arcade Fire.
The official premise, first released by IndieWire: “In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Mara) and BV (Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
It sounds like another ambitious project from Malick, a director known for his experimental style. With an all-star cast which also features the likes of Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett, Song for Song may become just another in a long line of classics Malick has directed.
The film’s release has been a long time coming, with production beginning in 2011. Most of the film was shot in 2012, with some coming earlier as Malick filmed scenes at 2011 music festivals Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest. In 2012 Rooney Mara joined the Black Lips on stage at ACL, playing guitar.
The film is set to debut at SXSW on March 10th before going wide on the 17th.
