Sober Gucci Mane has been showing up all sorts of places in 2016, from memes to SantaCon to Atlanta Hawks games with engagement rings. He also released a ton of music, some of which he wrote in prison based on beats described in text messages. Dude has been out of jail for like 5 months and he's had a busier 2016 than most other artists.
He caps off that Very Good Year with another unlikely appearance: in a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR. Typically the domain of earnest indie bands looking to unplug in front of a bookshelf, the series has produced a few surprising gems when it spreads its focus (we can't forget T-Pain's beautiful un-auto-tuned performance), but I still wouldn't have expected Gucci Mane.
And, damn, it works well. While Zaytoven puts on a clinic on the keys behind him (the year's best piano rap moment since Young Thug's "Kanye West"), Gucci brings more relaxed energy to the Tiny Desk than a thousand banjos. Three songs, 10 of the most fun minutes you'll have at your own desk today.
