PREMIERE: POM bring the avant-R&B circus to town

Ben Gunning and Bernice's Robin Dann share the debut EP from their avant R&B collaboration POM.

- Dec 7, 2016

We first met POM, the collaborative work of Toronto talents Ben Gunning and Robin Dann, with the debut single "Echo" in September. It felt a bit like a big, helium balloon let off into the blue sky — cheery and graceful with a whisper of melancholy. It was an appropriate feeling for the dying days of summer when it came to us. And now as the seasons change again, they've shared a whole collection of tracks to keep us bouncing, bubbly and snug into the cold.

We have really different aesthetics but I think that's what works: we stretch each other and the result is something neither of us could ever make alone. It's POM!

The three songs (plus an "Echo" remix that recalls Ben Gunning's house project with Thom Gill) contrast Gunning's playful, candy-coloured R&B with Dann's elegant melodic sense and her supple, acrobatic glider plane of a voice (also found in Bernice). It cruises circles around the stabs and handclaps, makes a loop-the-loop through the slinking basslines, and hugs the contours of the whistling and warbling synth leads. It's a spectacular tandem routine. A show not to be missed.

Dann told us a little bit about how the project came together:

I can remember emailing Ben while I was living in France in 2010 basically going fan girl on him about his album Mal de Mer and saying if he ever needed backup vocals once I moved back to Canada, I'd be so into singing with him. We kept in touch after that and those dreams did come true, and then the idea got floated to maybe try writing together.

Writing with Ben is fun because first I get to hang with his family, three of the coolest females I know, and have some of whatever delicious dinner he's casually whipped up, and then go down to his studio and make music. It's been very fun and natural and the sessions have turned into this EP!

POM's self titled debut EP is out December 13. Pre-order here.
