Last week, his buddy Chance The Rapper led a parade to the polls to help get the youth vote out in Chicago, campaiging against Trump's hateful, divisive message. Now, Donnie Trumpet, bandleader of the Social Experiment and Chance's buddy, says he can no longer perform under the name — once a dumb joke, now a poisonous association to the president-elect.
"What began as a joke, a silly play on words, is not funny anymore," he wrote Friday on Instagram. "I don't want to be connected to Trump’s hateful tone or his hurtful message. I don’t want to be misrepresented or misunderstood. Trump’s beliefs are not mine."
"From this point on, call me Nico," he says. All of the artist's socials have migrated to Nico Segal, his birthname.
"I am proud to be part of a multicultural family, from the great City of Chicago. I am grateful for the diversity of friends and family who have taught me and believed in me and encouraged me. I couldn’t stand to ever hurt them, or you."
It's a small but meaningful gesture: hate shouldn't be your mascot or your stagename.
