Feminist arts festival ditches Calgary venue The Palomino for booking Black Pussy

The Palomino will host Black Pussy next month, so Femme Wave has decided to go elsewhere.

UPDATE: The Palomino Smokehouse and Social Club has officially removed Black Pussy from the September 17 show.

Terribly-named Rock 'n' Roll renegades Black Pussy are scheduled to play The Palomino in Calgary on Saturday, September 17. The Facebook event describes the Portland-based band as "a group of rock n' roll pot-smoking fun-loving long hairs that are passionate about art, creativity and the dynamic human spirit which refuses to submit."

And because they refuse to submit (to decency, to reason, to a thousand voices saying, 'this hurts'') and because The Palomino, like other venues across Canada, had the bad sense to book them — for the second time! — when community after community has made it clear that their name is racist and misogynist and makes people feel unsafe, the Femme Wave Feminist Arts Festival has announced that it has withdrawn all of its 2016 programming from the venue.

In a statement posted to Facebook, festival organizers said, "We are really disappointed that the voices of those in the community who are affected by this continue to be marginalized by The Palomino.... We are diligent in our efforts to create safer spaces and listen to folks in the community."

Calgary's Society for the Advocacy of Safer Spaces (SASS) stand with Femme Wave on the issue, noting that in continuing to support Black Pussy, "the Palomino is not acting in the best interest of all their patrons." "We've seen some amazing programming happen at the Palomino," SASS's statement continues, "and know they are able to host events that do not actively exclude community members. We hope to work with the Palomino in the future but we cannot support this show."

So far, neither the venue nor the band have commented. Spurred by our piece about their show in Toronto in June, the band ended up on the rough end of a run-in with Tanya Tagaq and Lido Pimienta on Twitter. They're still RTing garbage like this, so we can imagine their mind hasn't been changed by reasoning.

In the meantime, you can expect this won't be the last boycott for a venue that books Black Pussy.
