NXNE might not be the citywide music takeover it once was, but that doesn't mean Toronto is going to be any quieter on the weekend of June 17 to 19. Live In Bellwoods: Great Heart Festival will return for its seventh year to Trinity Bellwoods park, featuring an all-free, mostly acoustic lineup of Canadian acts and good vibes. And we've got the first look at the lineup, below:
Jane's Party and Fresh Snow play Young Lions Music Club's intimate park festival, along with the psych-rock of Walrus, dreamy ambience of Blunt Chunks, and at least one drum solo by Hollerado's Jake Boyd. That's just the tip of the iceberg. There's folk-rock, electro-pop, and much more. And there's lots more to be announced. Expect lots of cool shades and cool dogs, maybe also in cool shades.
Though this year the festival will feature some microphones and amplification for the first time, don't expect a lot of cries of "Judas." Mayor John Tory cited Great Heart's struggles getting permits last year as a reason Toronto needed to cut the red tape for music in parks, saying it was a shame "a very peaceful acoustic guitar festival was getting frankly the runaround" from city bureaucracy. You can still expect some sunny, one-off performances like this gem.
So Great Heart will be the peaceful, almost acoustic (and, again, free) ying to NO FEST's louder yang. Either way, Toronto music fans have lots of options for the weekend of June 17 to 19.
