adrian teacher and the subs terminal city

PREMIERE: Adrian Teacher & The Subs hit fast forward on gentrification

The new Vancouver band (ex-Apollo Ghosts/COOL TV) animates what will soon happen to your neighbourhood.

- May 25, 2016

Adrian Teacher used to play in Apollo Ghosts and COOL TV, both venerable Vancouver bands, but with his new band The Subs he's able to take a wider, more sardonic gaze at the world and survey "a rapidly changing city, an endangered planet, faltering relationships and personal loss." And, especially, gentrification.

The video for "Terminal City," the title track from the band's upcoming You've Changed debut, speeds the process of gentrification to two and a half hilarious, teachable minutes of claymation.

Adrian Teacher & The Subs - Terminal City [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Drawn to the "character" of an old Vancouver neighbourhood, young professionals open up their artisanal nuts shops, their artisanal oils shops, their artisanal marijuana dispensaries with their artisanal doctors on Skype, and before you know it giant babies are suckling craft beer and going Godzilla all over the block. Then everyone goes for pho.

Designed and animated by drummer/singer Sub Amanda Pezzutto, the 2:25 video took three painstaking months to make, while the song was recorded in "a few takes live to tape in Montreal on the hottest day of the year," Teacher remembers.

"First song the Subs learned together as a band, last song they play at the show."

"Terminal City, the last stop on the train...isolation now ends. Will Adrian surf the wave?"

Adrian Teacher & The Subs' Terminal City is out May 27 on You've Changed Records.
