B L A C K I E has always made hip-hop with a half-life. Harsh and deeply personal stuff the mutant boar-men of Chernobyl would blast. Even when he went acoustic on his last record GEN, it still inspired the same queasy feelings you get when you accidentally view a photo full of death. "None Above," his latest single, brings those skills to the realm of noise, along with a stretched and swirlingly coloured video full of angst.
Utterly swamped in the nihilism of the title, B L A C K I E spews his "verses" like a man clawing against the basement door of his captor, as a cyclone of shrill horror whirls around him. Between this and the new Pharmakon album we've been promised, it's going to be a good year for wholly terrifying music.
