CBC Music sent a pair of rising Ontario rappers to Electric Lady studios to meet with legend Pete Rock and recreate his Golden Age classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" for part one of their four-part Rock The Mic series.

For 26-year-old Rich Kidd and 19-year-old Raz Fresco, it’s the best education tax dollars can buy, but it’s also a bit of a sink or swim scenario. Covering a ‘90s hip-hop high-point is hard enough, especially one so personal (Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s original was dedicated to the memory of the then-recently-departed “Trouble” T. Roy of Heavy D & The Boyz; this version is rededicated to Heavy D himself), but to do it in a legendary studio while the original artist watches and nods has got to be nerve-racking.

As you’ll see, this live-band-assisted, horn-flecked, Soulquarians-evoking new version does the original justice, while transforming it into something new and great.
