Pussy Riot release beseiged Sochi protest video, “Putin Will Teach You How To Love”

Hard to watch, and totally essential.

- Feb 20, 2014

Yesterday members of the Russian punk protest movement Pussy Riot were attacked in Sochi by Cossacks armed with whips. They were performing a new piece in protest of the Winter Olympics. Footage of the incident can be viewed here (warning: it's incredibly graphic). You can also watch excerpts of the attack in "Putin Will Teach You How To Love," a new music video that was made, according to the Chicago Tribune, "...to draw attention to the trial of Russians charged with organizing violent mass disorder, following protests on the eve of Putin's inauguration for a third term as president in May 2012."

The band were not able to find a venue in Sochi to host their press conference, and instead held it in the street. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who was imprisoned for the Pussy Riot protest that drew the world's attention and released in December, said: "The Olympics creates a space for the complete destruction of human rights in Russia. Here we are banned from speaking out. Here everyone's rights are banned, including political activist, LGBT representatives, ecologists...."

According to a report in Billboard, "International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said the governor of the Krasnodar region has apologized for the attack on Pussy Riot." He also said: "...it's a shame if the Olympics is used as a political platform" and "we saw the strong feelings, on both sides, these things can provoke." They were asking for it, wearing those masks and dresses.

I didn't need another reason to not give a shit about this smarmy event, but now I can actively resent it thanks to that statement. Cool.
