Pop Montreal is underway. There are a lot of concerts you can go see. Each day we're going to list which shows you should make time for, with songs by the artists playing for convincing's sake.
Saturday, September 28th
Fixture Records présente : Chevalier Avant Garde (LP Release), Freelove Fenner, Mavo, Homeshake, and Brave Radar @ Brasserie Beaubien. 9 PM. $10.
One of our favourite Montreal labels celebrates an excellent LP from Chevalier Avant Garde, a synth-pop soundtrack for conflicted cyborgs everywhere called Resurrection Machine. Chart faves Freelove Fenner, Mavo, and Homeshake will all perform as well. Also, the venue has both the words “bra” and “beau” in the title, so there really is something for everyone at this showcase.
Shuggie Otis, Each Other, Lexis @ Théâtre Rialto. 8:30 PM. $25
“Shuggie Otis? Who the hell's that? I've never heard any of his songs!” Wrong, dude. Wrong. Also, don't get so damn defensive all the time. Remember this? Yeah, it's one of the most sampled songs ever. His re-issue of 1974's Inspiration Information will ruin every new psychedelic band for you forever. Avant indie weirdos Each Other will confuse all the Dads in the audience with an opening set.
Here's what this line-up means: punk, mosh-pits, heavy boots, torn sneakers, and some sour looking dude in the centre of it all who's really mad at you for spilling his beer even though he's right at the front. If you get lost on your way, look for the venue with all the sweaty kids with steaming bodies cooling off outside.
Killer Mike + Tre Mission + Shaydakiss + DJ Illo @ Cabaret du Mile-End. 10PM. Free with reservation.
Killer Mike returns to Canada after a highly acclaimed collaborative record and tour with El-P, and brings Toronto based grime MC and producer Tre Mission with him. This event is free and full of free booze and good rappers, so you should RSVP and arrive early.
