Jimmy Fallon’s hosting gig on Saturday Night Live this past weekend drew in a consequent alumni-ococlypse. We saw the return of Weekend Updaters Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and other former cast members Rachel Dratch, Horatio Sanz and Chris Kattan.
Traditional (or nostalgic) winter SNL skits were resurrected, including the Fallon-Sanz-Kattan-Morgan sing-a-long “I Wish It Was Christmas Today”. It’s a throwback to the original or the Julian Casablancas-assisted rendition, for the younger generation. But, perhaps the best skit of the night was the star-studded Michael Buble commercial.
Although Fallon delivered impressive takes on Sting, Justin Bieber and Russell Brand – it was Fred Armisen’s hilarious schitzo-impersonation of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke that took the cake. It mirrored those bouncy moves in the “Lotus Flower” video that familiarize MADTV’s Stuart. Honourable mentions go out to Nasseem Pedrad’s M.I.A., Jay Pharoah’s Jesus-stomping Kanye and Kristen Wiig’s Taylor Swift – in her famous “surprised” mode.
