AU – “Solid Gold”
In anticipation of their forthcoming third album, Portland-based duo AU released a 7″ that includes A-side “Solid Gold.” The fast-paced jaunt guests saxophone virtuoso Colin Stetson, who shines on both bass and alto sax. Overall, a excellent piece of quirky orchestral pop.
Fol Chen – “Back on Kent”
Enigmatic LA music collective Fol Chen loves to push themselves in strange new directions. They’ve just come out with a strange, pyramidical electronic music instrument called a Tetrafol, designed with help from Monome and The Machine Project. You can get a glimpse of the device in action in this teaser video, and hear it making strange, warbley noises in the background of “Back on Kent.”
Saint Saviour – “Horse”
Do yourself a favour and clear four minutes for “Horse” from melordramatic singer-songwriter Saint Saviour, a.k.a. Becky Jones, which demands your full attention. The heartbreaking piano-led tune is a demo of the real version, which will appear on Jones’ forthcoming debut album. If the rest of the record is as powerful and affecting as this outstanding ballad, I’m sold.
