Simple concepts can go a long way. Just watch the newest mesmerizing video from dream team Ewan Jones Morris and Casey Raymond (the same people who brought you the equally stunning “Hello Sadness” from Los Campesinos!) for DJ Shadow’s song “Scale it Back,” off of his newest album The Less You Know, the Better.
Beginning simply enough, World Memory Champion Ben Pridmore speaks plainly about the stories behind memory sequences and how it relates to memorizing the order of cards in a deck. But things soon get weird in this charmingly discursive associational story that involves snakes, pterodactyls, knights eating cake and Chun-Li from Street Fighter. Plus, you get to see Pridmore burst out of a cardboard cake and explain the whole story! All in a single take, no less.
