When Arcade Fire took home Album of the Year at this year’s GRAMMY Awards, there was both celebration and backlash. Some felt that the win meant that the cherished Canadian orchestral rock outfit had ‘sold out’, but in an article for The Walrus, Drew Nelles argues that they were finally getting the praise they deserved. In Montreal, many Arcade Fire fans became outraged that their beloved band was being taken from them. But Nelles points out that, while Arcade Fire are still Montreal’s band, like many Montrealers they have been struggling to find their identity.
He sums up the Arcade Fire / Montreal relationship brilliantly in one final line: “Arcade Fire was our band before it was anyone else’s, but it was always too good to keep to ourselves.”
