Turns out that the title of Craig Finn’s forthcoming record will be very familiar to TV addicts. The Hold Steady frontman’s solo effort Clear Hearts Full Eyes is an inverted reference to the outstanding Texas football drama Friday Night Lights. Is there anybody that Coach Tayloy can’t inspire? In an issued statement, Finn explains the title:
“I’m calling this record Clear Heart Full Eyes. It’s a juxtaposed reference to Friday Night Lights, a TV show that excited and moved me and also happened in Texas. Further, “Clear Heart” signifies honesty and transparency, and “Full Eyes” suggests experience. Thus, it’s about being optimistic and open without succumbing to the weariness or doubt that comes with age and experience. To me, that is what it’s all about.”
The album spans 11 tracks, featuring the previously reported upcoming single “Honolulu Blues” and a song called “No Future”, which seems to be a reference to friends Titus Andronicus. Finn certainly loves his intertextuality.
The album was recorded in Austin, TX and features members of White Denim, The Heartless Bastards, Phosphorescent, and Centro-matic. Clear Heart Full Eyes will be released January 24 via Vagrant Records. The tracklist is below.
