The joyfully bleak U.K. indie pop group Los Campesinos! are highly divisive. While their striking debut Hold On Now, Youngster (and subsequent EP We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed) earned them a great deal of praise, some listeners also accused the band of being ‘one-note’. The under-appreciated follow-up Romance is Boring proved otherwise, charting darker territory for the band, while retaining the catchy playfulness that makes them continuously listenable.
On November 15, Los Campesinos! will release their third full length Hello Sadness, but your impatient ears can hear the whole thing now over at NPR.
You’ll find Gareth Campesinos’ usual biting wit and wordplay throughout, but there is a much deeper sadness teeming through the album, making this their most personal and affecting yet. Campesinos devotees: you won’t be disappointed. Campesinos doubters: I recommend you give this band a second chance. They really deserve it.
