The world was introduced to South African trio Die Antwoord in a short video called “Zef Side” that hit YouTube in late 2009. It’s a downright hilarious short clip with only a taste of the group’s music. But the characters — regardless of their authenticity — are so compelling, peculiar, yet entirely believable, it was (and still is) almost impossible not to hit that replay button over and over and over.
The band’s debut album $O$ may have received mix reviews, but the group’s Zef-to-death image and lingo were so damn entertaining that their rap-rave became secondary to their over-the-top narrative — a narrative that was captured perfectly in an amazing fifteen-minute film called Umshimi Wam.
SPIN caught up with the group to hear preview their upcoming album, Tensions, which should be out in January 2012. Apparently, it’s going to be “even freakier and more absurd (hilarious skits!), yet simultaneously smart and culturally relevant”. According to the band, we can expect party jams, psycho freak-out pop, and “some apocalyptic fuckin’ industrial rave.” Read in-depth descriptions of four Tensions cuts over at SPIN. Sounds like some next level shit.
