Bon Iver Album Accidentally Leaked By iTunes?

If this is true, somebody’s losing their job.

You may have noticed Bon Iver‘s self-titled sophomore album appeared on the series of interconnected leaky tubes that are the interwebs last week. Normally, you’d think its appearance was just a case of some faulty plumbing caused by a pirate, but that might actually not be the case here.

Rolling Stone cites numerous posts on Reddit which seem to indicate iTunes may have accidentally leaked Bon Iver when it posted “Calgary,” the album’s first single, online and mistakenly put the entire album up for purchase last Tuesday instead. If it’s true, that’s a big oops, considering iTunes is a legitimate digital retailer and Bon Iver isn’t out until June 21. And of course, the album immediately showed up on dozens of pirate and torrent sites.

Jagjaguwar, Bon Iver’s label, along with iTunes and Bon Iver singer Justin Vernon’s lawyer aren’t commenting on the leak.

If this leak is for real, it’s not without precedent. In 2008, iTunes accidentally made The Raconteurs’ Consolers Of The Lonely available for purchase before its actual release date.
