Arcade Fire have chimed in on Canada’s upcoming federal election.
Canadians head to the polls May 2, and the Montreal Grammy- and- Juno-winning band are encouraging those eligible to vote not to mark an X next to a Conservative candidate.
“It is about to be voting time,” they wrote on their website Wednesday. “Our current leader has championed some pretty destructive initiatives on everyone’s behalf… it’s really important to get out and vote on May 2.”
The band also posted a link to Elections Canada’s website, detailing how Canadians who are out of the country May 2 can vote in the election.
“For anyone unfamiliar with Mr. [Stephen] Harper’s work, do have a look…” they continued, before pointing readers to posts on CBC News about how the prime minister dismissed the Kyoto Protocol as a “socialist scheme” in 2007, photos of toxic sludge in Alberta’s tar sands and information about arrests and civil liberties violations during last year’s G20 summit in Toronto.
“Canada is still a pretty good country, and worth fighting for…” they finished.
Last month, Broken Social Scene guitarist Andrew Whiteman came out against the Conservative Party Of Canada. He scrawled “VOTE HARPER OUT NOW” on his guitar at the Juno Awards on March 27, and made sure to display it for TV cameras capturing BSS’ performance.
