Muse singer/guitarist/keyboardist Matthew Bellamy‘s drunken antics at Wednesday night’s Shockwaves NME Awards will now live in infamy, thanks to the interwebs.
They were first documented during a video interview the frontman and drummer Dom Howard did with the magazine and website. Bellamy started the interview with his coat pulled up over his head, and from then on it just got even more ridiculous.
You can watch it below, but basically, here are some of the highlights:
Interviewer: How do you feel (about winning the Best British Band award two years in a row)?
Dom Howard: Great. Over the moon. Second year running. Feel like we’re having a deja vu right now.
Matt Bellamy: Fuck off, you cunt! Yeah, you. Fuck you.
(Howard sticks the middle finger of the NME Award trophy up Bellamy’s nose.)
Bellamy: NME’s like the… Is this NME?
Howard: No. This is the Q Awards.
Bellamy: No, no, no, no, no. NME is like, uh… I love NME, I mean, ’cause it’s like a crazy, weird, crazy, sort of codependent, psycho girlfriend that like, loves you one minute, then hates you, and loves you, then hates you, and it just makes you want to come back for more. I want more from the NME. That’s what I want. I believe in the NME. I love the NME. Always have done.
Howard: Last summer was great. We did play more stadiums than we have done previously, and it was amazing. We had a great time. The one thing about playing those kinds of huge gigs –
Bellamy: Who do you think you are?!
Howard: Eventually, we will start playing some new music and working on it, but we’re kind of just coming towards the end of touring the album, so we’ll kind of have a little chill time.
Bellamy: *Makes raspberry at Howard*
Howard: He’s drunk if you haven’t realized. This is Matthew Bellamy pissed up.
At the end of the interview, Bellamy stated the band will definitely play “a gig” this year.
Here’s the full interview:
His antics didn’t end at the awards, though. They continued at an afterparty where he was pictured looking very out of it with a glass of vino in his hand with Hurts’ Adam Anderson at his side.
He also apparently gave Anderson some advice on groupies.
“Oh, I’ve had fun, a lot of fun,” he said, according to The Sun. “You have to go to Italy. The women there are incredible.”
The Sun states that Bellamy had been trying to get a hold of Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis all night, but not for reasons you might expect. No, he wasn’t trying to get Eavis to book Muse for Glasto ’11 – he wanted tips on how to set up a hemp farm.
Muse fans have been so… amused (ha… ha…) by Bellamy’s drunken behaviour that they’ve set up a bunch of Facebook groups in his honour. One is amusingly called FXCK OFF You CUNT. Yeah, you. Fxck off. Come on, now, if Bellamy could say it out loud, why can’t you just type “fuck” out?
There are also two more groups, along with a special event called Drunk Matt Week. It runs all next week.
Muse head to South America for some gigs later this year. You can see them here:
