The Canadian Radio-television And Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has told a music television station it cannot have the terms of its licence changed… and the channel in question isn’t MuchMusic.
The CRTC decided AUX will not be allowed to play more music videos last Thursday.
Last July, AUX filed an application with the CRTC, asking the commission to delete a condition in its licence stipulating only 35 per cent of AUX’s programming can be music videos.
AUX wanted the license amended because at the time, MuchMusic had filed a request to reduce the amount of music videos it played from 50 to 25 per cent of its broadcast week. (The CRTC later said no to MuchMusic about that, too.) AUX also argued other Category 2 specialty stations do not have limits on the number of music videos they can play.
But in its decision, CRTC said no because deleting that part of AUX’s licence would put it directly in competition with MuchMusic. This has echoes of a similar decision by the CRTC last year. Then, AUX applied to start a French-language version of the station, but the CRTC said no because a French AUX would be in direct competition with MusiquePlus.
