It was announced earlier today that Manotick rockers Hollerado earned a 2011 Juno Awards nomination for new group of the year. The band will face off against Die Mannequin, Said The Whale, My Darkest Days and Misteur Valaire in the category.
CHARTattack spoke to bassist Dean Baxter at the Juno Awards press conference.
We’re gonna knock the cliche question off first. How does it feel to be nominated?
Dean Baxter: It feels great. We’re in a lot of good company up there and hopefully we win, but whatever. That was supposed to be a cliché answer but I kinda bit it.
What is the one thing about your record that you’re most proud of that you can look back at and go, “Yeah, we deserve an award for that”?
We just had a great time making it. It was basically a party to do it and I felt like that translated to the record. So honestly I’m most proud of that and I’m proud that we did what we wanted to do so it deserves whatever it deserves.
Don’t be modest. Why are you guys awesome?
We’re awesome because we do whatever we want outside of music. Like making hot sauce, we’ve got a line of toys coming out in the fall of 2012…
Sorry, can you rewind for a sec? Toys?
I can’t say too much about it. We’re still in the patenting process, but, y’know, plush toys, novelty alarm clocks… that sort of thing. That’s why we’re awesome.
Why are you better than your fellow nominees?
That’s a tough one. Because I can’t say that we are. We’re great, great friends with Said The Whale and started playing shows around the same time. We’ve toured with them. Love them.
I think if you know them you’re allowed to be doubly mean.
Well then it’s purely because they’re from the west coast and that sucks, so they suck.
There we go. The one big thing is that Neil Young might be there. If there was a magic opportunity where you guys got to go onstage with him, and you got to pick the song, and there was some big giant super-jam, what song would it be and what would be your dream Neil Young scenario?
You know when you fantasize about something you really take it to the limit and you know it’s not going to happen. So thinking about that, the biggest thing I can come up with is walking to the washroom and I pass him in the hall and I don’t make it to the washroom in time and I pee my pants. That’s the biggest thing I can foresee happening with us and Neil Young. That or we play “Cinnamon Girl” together. One of those two things.
