Normally, someone performing at an awards show wouldn’t be a huge deal. An act playing at the Grammys wouldn’t be a story in itself, either, on your average day. People do it all the time, and many Canadian acts have also done so.
But when you’re Arcade Fire and you’re famous for saying “no” to appearing at awards shows (or just not being asked because you weren’t gargantuan like you are now), it becomes major news when you say “yes” to playing the Grammys.
It’s also kind of huge news because Arcade Fire have never performed at a major awards show throughout their existence as a band. We say “major,” but we should probably add that they performed at the 2006 Indie Awards during Canadian Music Week. That’s not a “major” awards show on par with the Grammys, mind you.
They’ve never performed at the Grammys, even though they were nominated for awards in 2006 and 2008 (of course, they weren’t big enough then). Nor have they performed at the Junos despite multiple nominations in the past. They haven’t done the BRIT Awards, either.
But Arcade Fire have indeed been confirmed to appear at this year’s Grammy Awards, which will air Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Their images are also being used in the Grammys’ promotional ads and mobile application.
This pretty much means they’re huge jerks if The Suburbs gets short listed for the Polaris Music Prize this year and they don’t show up…
You can see Arcade Fire on July 17 at the Festival Internacional De Benicassim in Benicassim, Spain.
