It’s always a bit hit and miss with charts during the post-Christmas period. Universities close up and campus radio stations cut back to skeleton crews and the music departments all disappear into the hinterlands for a couple of weeks. There are few contributing stations and the chart results are quite skewed. The campus chart for the week ending Jan. 11 is one of the whackiest in recent history.
There was no change at #1 this week, as The Russian Futurists‘ The Weight’s On The Wheel remains in the top position, the first album to repeat at #1 since Women’s Public Strain succeeded in remaining at #1 during the week of Nov. 16. With the smaller amount of chart contributers, The Weight’s On The Wheel total chart number was 658 points, down from the usual 1000+ range scores.
Giant Sand’s Blurry Blue Mountain rises a place to grab the #2 spot while Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs continues to hang around the top of the charts jumping back up the list nine places to #3 in its 22nd week on the campus chart. This ties AF’s new disc with their debut, Funeral in weeks service on the chart.
Autumn Defense’s Once Around rises a spot to #4 followed by Jim Bryson And Weakerthan’s The Falcon Lake Incident jumping four places to the #5 position.
Deerhunter’s Halcyon Digest holds at #6 again this week. Belle And Sebastian’s Belle And Sebastian Write About Love rises back up the chart 13 places to sit at #6 with Imaginary Cities’ Temporary Resident blasting into the top ten with a 19 place rise to #8.
Michael Rault’s Ma-Me-O jumps eight places to #9 and Bran Van 3000′s The Garden scrapes into the top ten with a five place rise to #10. It’s the first time in over 13 years that a Bran Van 3000 album has occupied a place in the top ten. In late August 1997, Glee appeared in the top ten for several weeks.
The battle for the Chart Sizzler Award took place between and Christams-released soundtrack for a movie sequel and a new Christmas-themed Canadian album. Daft Punk‘s Tron Legacy OST wins the CSA this week debuting at #18 one place ahead of Ox’s Silent Night & Other Cowboy Songs.
There were quite a few new entries this week highlighted by Doctor Ew’s Gadzooks entering at #23. Along with Ox’s Xmas CD, The Good Lovelies’ Under The Mistletoe arrives at #27.
Regina Spektor’s Live In London arrives at #30 followed by The Guest Bedroom’s A Year’s Supply Of Rabbit’s Feet at #31 and Orange Juice’s Coals To Newcastle at #32.
Two long-serving albums from 2010 return after long absences this week. The Black Keys’ Brothers re-enters at #26 in its 21st week. It last appeared on the campus chart during the week of Oct. 12. Tokyo Police Club’s Champ reappears at #43 to bring its total to 24 weeks. The last time Champ charted was during the week of Nov 16.
Three of the five specialty charts have current #1 albums that had already occupied that position several weeks ago.
Kylesa’s Spiral Shadow swaps places with Cradle Of Filth’s Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa to return to #1 after a week’s absence.
Aeroplane Trio’s Naranja Ha re-enters the Jazz/Blues at #1 a place it held two weeks ago.
More Or Les’ Brunch With A Vengeance recaptures the #1 album position on the Hip-Hop top ten after a two week drop down the chart.
Drumhand’s Moving Still rises five places to grab the top spot on the World/Folk chart.
Daft Punk pulls off the rare double debut this week. On top of capturing the Chart Sizzler this week, the duo’s Tron Legacy OST debuts at #1 on the Electronic top ten.
