Remember how much you used to love The Wedge on MuchMusic? You’d tune in late Friday nights in high school to see whatever was cool or hip in the world that wasn’t full of Nickelback and Avril Lavigne. Then The Wedge got cancelled, which was all kinds of “sad face.”
Well, it’s coming back, and what’s even more awesome is Fucked Up’s Damian “Pink Eyes” Abraham is going to host it! It’ll start airing again on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET beginning Jan. 26.
“The Wedge played a huge part in my musical development,” says Abraham in a press release. “I’m honoured to be able to have the same impact on a new generation of music fans.”
The revamped version of The Wedge will not only feature videos, but will present them live where they’ll be discussed “by a community of opinionated musicians.” That sounds almost as opinionated as a Polaris Music Prize grand jury session, but not quite.
Live performances and interview segments will also be broadcast, which makes the new version of The Wedge actually sound like a significant improvement over the old one. Getting Abraham to host it, though, we think can only be described as “shitting in Aux’s mouth.”
RapCity is also returning to the network, and it’ll relaunch Jan. 20 at 10 p.m. ET. It will be hosted by T-RexXx, who’s better known as Tyrone Edwards. It, too, will feature videos, performances and interviews and “rare, classic moments” from the RapCity vault. It’ll premiere with an interview with Drake.
Some other music-related content is also coming to the network.
New.Music.Live is being marketed as MuchMusic’s “new flagship show.” It’s basically a new version of Live@Much. It’s broadcast Monday to Friday at 5 p.m. ET.
The MuchMusic Countdown is also being extended. It currently runs in an hour-long format, but will be increased to an hour-and-a-half. It airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
Another new program, #Trending, will examine the hottest Canadian trends of the moment.
Last May, MuchMusic asked the Canadian Radio-television And Communications Commission (CRTC) if it could decrease its music video programming. The CRTC declined that request in November.
