The XX Win Mercury Prize

London, England indie rockers The XX won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize last night, beating out the likes of Paul Weller, Foals and Wild Beasts.
The trio were awarded the £20,000 (about $32,000 Canadian) award for their 2009 self-titled debut album at a ceremony in London, after which they said they planned to use the money to build their own studio.
"We made this album in a converted garage at our record label," singer Romy Madley Croft said following the band's win.
"We felt very lucky at the time to use it, but I think we'd love to make our own studio, somewhere where we can just experiment and let Jamie [Smith, drummer/beatmaker] produce."
The XX were first-time nominees on a list that also included Dizzee Rascal, Laura Marling and Paul Weller, who have all been short listed in the past. Rascal won the Mercury Prize for his 2003 Boy In Da Corner debut album that year and was also nominated for 2007's Maths + English.
The Mercury Prize is awarded to the album critics deem to be the best LP released in the United Kingdom and Ireland each year. Other previous winners include Klaxons, Primal Scream, Suede, Portishead, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy, PJ Harvey, Gomez, Franz Ferdinand, Antony And The Johnsons, Arctic Monkeys and Elbow.
