Former ELO Member Killed By Hay Bale

Mike Edwards

Plenty of rock stars have died in really freaky ways.

John Bonham died in his sleep by choking on his own vomit after puking up a ham sandwich and tons of vodka he'd consumed earlier the same day.

Terry Kath shot himself in the head after insisting the gun he was holding wasn't loaded. Oops.

French pop star Claude Francois was electrocuted when he was trying to fix a broken lightbulb. He was standing in a bathtub at the time.

And now former Electric Light Orchestra cellist Mike Edwards has been crushed to death by a hay bale.

Edwards was driving on the A381 in England on Friday when a 600 kilogram (about 1,300 pounds — well over a ton) fell off a tractor on a farm and then rolled onto the road, crushing his van. He was killed instantly, according to BBC News, and swerved into another car after behind hit by the bale. The other driver involved in the accident wasn't hurt.

Edwards had previously played on recordings by British prog rock band Barclay James Harvest before he joined ELO. He performed with them at their first ever gig in 1972, and was a member until 1975. He appears on 1973's ELO 2 and On The Third Day, and 1974's The Night The Light Went On (In Long Beach) and Eldorado — A Symphony By The Electric Light Orchestra.

After leaving ELO, he joined the Rajneesh movement of Indian mystic Osho and wrote plays and his own recordings. In recent years, he had performed with Devon Baroque and the L'Ardito baroque trio. He was to play with medieval folk band Daughters Of Elvin in Totnes, England on Saturday.
