There comes a point in one’s career, or in a series, or in anything entertainment related, where it’s time to gracefully bow out. Otherwise, you run the risk of “jumping the shark,” as the saying goes — overstaying your welcome and turning your original piece of art into a ridiculous, absurdity-filled version of its former self.
Many acts don’t realize when it’s time for them to stop, and so you get bands like The Rolling Stones going on to oblivion when they should just “get off the stage,” as Morrissey would say.
Perhaps Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett realize this because they’ve recently gone on record as saying they could be done with Gorillaz once their current leg of tour dates finishes.
“[Gorillaz has] been an unqualified success — bizarrely,” Albarn told theage.com. “But as far as communicating an idea to an audience, who knows? We always think that when we get to a point where we’ve achieved something that it’s time to stop.”
“This would be a wonderful point to leave Gorillaz, at the end of this tour, I think,” Hewlett said.
“That’s not a statement. I’m just saying if that were the case… Gorillaz is more like a big sprawling gang of people you could do any number of projects with.”
Don’t freak out just yet, though — Albarn went on say he and Hewlett would “see how we feel in January” before making any big decisions.
And let’s not forget that just last month, Albarn said he’d been working on a new Gorillaz album, which he’d been recording entirely on his iPad. So this could just mean a road hiatus… or they could both just be blabbing on about nothing at all. Then again, he did say the record could be out by Christmas…
In any case, here are Gorillaz’ upcoming tour dates:
Dec. 8 Adelaide, Australia @ Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Dec. 11 Melbourne, Australia @ Rod Laver Arena
Dec. 16 Sydney, Australia @ Sydney Entertainment Centre
Dec. 19 Brisbane, Australia @ Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Dec. 21 Auckland, New Zealand @ Vector Arena
